A few years ago, I called the airline and, based on what they told me, designed a case that should have been allowed on the plane. When I got to the gate, they insisted that it go in with luggage. My wife handed me my English horn, I handed her my trombone, and I was on my way. That would not work if you were flying to a gig.
I suppose, if you had checked luggage, you might be a little more insistent on taking your trombone on board. Since 9-11, they really don't like to take luggage without the owner. And they really don't like having to unpack all of the luggage to take your bag out. In that the 9-11 terrorists were willing to die, in the process, the whole airport security thing seems silly. But that's a whole, long non-trombone-related thread, in and of itself. *1
If you're not trying to start a revolution and just want to get where you want to go, Maybe you can find a guitar case that's large enough to fit a trombone. My Telecaster would probably be fine in luggage without a case. And yet, I can take it on-board.
Packing the trombone in two boxes, one for the bell and one for the slide, will probably do the trick. Someone, a few years ago, suggested that a slide fits in an arrow box.

*1 PS. Evidently, some English Aramaic scholars found that quote about how Moslems who died while fighting a jihad go straight to heaven and have 15 virgins (What do women martyrs get?). It isn't in the Koran. They were particularly troubled by it because although the word is now slang for "virgins", its original meant white raisins. So quite possibly, these martyrs are dying for 15 white raisins?
