Jeff,
I had a double large bass in leather. It would fit on SOME planes'
overhead bins--usually newer models or updated versions of older
models. Best to see which plane it is and call the airline. They can
usually find someone to give you 3D measurements, or sometimes Boeing,
MD will provide them.
Other options have been discussed here and include the Cronkhite
'flight case'. It only holds a single axe, but splits apart. Maybe 3
of those? Of course, this all presumes you are talking about carry-on
options.
