[Trombone-l] Pit Stories

On one of the last ships I was on... We backed Al Martino. Man! That
was a fun book to play. The band was 3 tpts, 2 bones (I played lead,
Mike Brumbaugh on bass--now in San Antonio), 4 reeds and 4 rhythm.
The MD was the coolest, most laid back and most organized I'd ever
worked with. We got the rehearsal for a 2-hr. show done in a little
over an hour. The MD says, "That's great. See you tonight."

Go on & do the show. The band was smokin'. Al puts on a heck of a
show. Comes backstage to us after the show and says "Man! That
sounded like Basie's band." We took that as the highest compliment.
'Cuz Basie and his guys had written the book.

The MD came below deck that night with a briefcase stuffed with
sandwiches and a case of Heinie's he'd absconded from Al's dressing
room and hung out with us all night telling Vegas and Atlantic City
stories.

To me, that was more of an education than I ever got in college.

Good times.

I've really enjoyed reading about players experiences with Wicked.
Anyone
else out there playing in a pit for a show? I'd love to hear stories
about
your past and present gigs.
