A few weeks ago, I was playing Conrad Susa's Transformations at a small
venue. The orchestration is pretty unique- One woodwind, trumpet,
trombone, keyboards, bass and 2 percussionists if I'm not mistaken. I
sat with the trumpet player to my left, the 1st keyboard in front of me,
and the 2nd keyboard behind me. On the penultimate performance, I think
in the "Iron Hans" movement, the 2nd keyboardist was holding a chord,
while one of the characters was in recitative. The conductor yells out
"YOU'RE PLAYING TOO LOUD!!" and waves her off with a whip of her hand.
The trumpet player and I bit our lips and bowed our heads.
