This is what I thought when I initially came across this configuration. D 
isn't all that far down the slide on an F valve if you want to play it on 
one valve after all. Losing the Gb valve is something most in-line players 
would miss badly. I suppose there is some advantage in being able to play B 
and Bb on one valve assuming there's enough slide positions to play the 
latter) but, referring to my comment in another post, that still leaves Ab 
and G s either two-valve or pedal in Mahler 6 where they're meant to be 
really loud.
