Ed Anderson played with us several times when he was at IU and his son
was playing doublebass with us. Ed played on Planets, Mahler 2nd, and
one or two other works. Great guy, fantastic player. He had a 10 1/2
bell Bach at that time, but did use the F and C valves. He said you
never use them together. I think the idea is to have the most open low
C and B possible.
There are several players around with separate F and D valves for the
same purpose, (why not just stick with dependent valves?) but the C
valve seems like too much to my mind. And how do you play fast or
legato Db - C? You either have to play the C in 7th, or run back into
first.
I love my Gb valve. I use it a million times a day.
