[Trombone-l] Extra low valve settings

When we played Mahler 2 with the LPO this past season, Ed Anderson
(retired Cleveland bass trombonist and father of LPO's principal bass
player) came in to play the extra trombone part. He played fourth,
and I played third.

Ed plays a Bach with an 11 in bell (yes, typed 11 on purpose), and
thayers in F and C. Yes, the paddle valve is in C, alone...by itself.
I don't think he uses them in combination much. I asked him about
it, and I think part of it is the weight, the main reason seemed to be
that he wanted a C that only used one valve. I agree that C is a
money note, and his is pretty rockin', even at 70-something years old.

I couldn't play that rig, but Ed sounds great on it.
