Since you called me out, I'll answer. But I'm afraid I don't really
know. Pagliacci was composed in 1892, which was a good decade after
the invention and introduction of the "trombone basso Verdi," so that
is a possibility. Although I have no idea how long that valve
contrabass trombone remained in use, or if it even caught on at all.
The best thing would be to take a look in Clifford Bevan's The Tuba
Family. (But you know that!)
