RCM includes 11 grades plus an ARCT (Associate of the Royal Conservatory of
Toronto) diploma. As you move up grades, there are also separate theory
exams required in order complete a grade level. Grade 4-6 is what we suggest
as the required ability level in our Youth Orchestra. Many smaller symphony
orchestras want grade 8-10 minimum.
Your are right that we should all be able to play scales, sight read,
etc..... I guess it's the level expected that separates the grade levels. I
don't have the RCM syllabus handy but from what I remember from my
daughter's exam, they all have to be done from memory, various tonguing
techniques (2 tongued/2 slurred, etc.), minimum tempos, various numbers of
octaves. They were also expected to know the full range of intervals - not
just the basic ones.
Perhaps a better known exam piece would be Morceau Symphonique which I'm
pretty sure was on the list for grade 8 Euphonium. The Mozart horn
concertos are grade 6-8 level for french horn if that helps put it in
perspective at all.
Peter.

Without appearing too uninformed.
Where does "Grade VI" fall on the 1 - 10 scale?
I mean shouldn't all of us be able to play major/minor scales, sight
read to SOME extent and master the basic third/fourth & fifth intervals?
Since I'm not familiar with the charts named (Bach's Arioso or Handel's
Adagio Cantabile) I don't know how to judge that.
Again .. I'm not really informed, so to the rest of this august mob I
may appear stoopid. Not the first time...
Thanks!
