George,
I'm not sure if it's the same in Britain but in Canada we generally follow
the Royal Conservatory of Music standards (www.rcmusic.ca) and Grade 6
requires ability to play selections such as Bach's Arioso or Handel's Adagio
Cantabile (from Solos for the Trombone Player, Hal Leonard publ.), all
major/minor scales, intervals, sight reading. RCM exams can also be taken
in the USA.
Peter.

Noticed the posting for an opening in one of the British Bands with the
notation "Grade VI Standard"... I assume this is an expertise or playing
level,
but would someone care to expand on this or clarify the various playing
levels?
Thanks!
George
