Try using just one plug in the ear that is most affected by loud sounds. 
Sometimes I have the timpani on my right side so I put one on that side and 
leave the other open. I like the combination of stuffed up sound on one side 
and real sound on the other. All ear plugs take getting used to. Also with 
the er20´s you can put them in just part of the way. Experiment.
