This story may be apocryphal, as I didn't hear it from either of the 
principals.

In the 70s, Kenton's band was playing the Reno Jazz festival.  Dick 
Shearer was at the back of a hall when a college band with a section of 
Bach 42s and Conn 88s was playing.  Some band director is supposed to 
have said (Shearer), "Isn't that a great sounding trombone section?"  
Shearer is supposed to have said, "Sounds like a goddam herd of 
baritones to me."
