I play trombone for a living and own tons of mutes. at least three
different straights and cups, just for tenor, plus all the
bucket/solotone/harmon(bubble with stem), etc. I hardly ever use any
of them. Some of that is a function of the kind of work I do, but
still.

mute will be fine. He knows there are better sounding options out
there if he feels the need. It doesn't sound like he has the need
though.
