Everything is relative, of course.
My Boosey G Bass (a minor third lower than a modern
Bb/F/whatever 2nd valve) is a .535 Bass, yet 42B's,
4B's, 88H's etc are .547 Tenors.
When most of us were in High School, Ignorant
(ignorant of Trombones, anyway) band directors called
any Trombone with even 1 valve, a Bass.
Calling it one doesn't make it so.
With my students I use the analogy of a bicycle: if
you put 2" wide tires on a 10-speed bike, is that a
mountain bike? of course, not.
What we now call Symphonic Tenors (.547 bores) were
bigger than Bass Trombones as recently as 100 years
ago. A lot of us even use 88H's or 42B's as Bass
Trombones when playing 3rd parts in Beethoven or
Mozart. It just makes sense.
