Elliot,

The Dou Gravis, 6B, 1490, 2106, whatever you call it only had the double 
thumb triggers until the day it died.  If you saw one with something 
like a middle finger second trigger, then it was a custom job.  The man 
who owned it was just mistaken, or bought it used and didn't know it, or 
the music store converted the triggers before they sold it to him.

Yes, I believe you're right that the "Symphony Bass" was a smaller bore 
originally.  .530-something" sounds right.  It was KIng's only "bass" 
trombone until, I believe, about 1971 when the Dou Gravis came out.

The Bach 36 and 36B are .525" bore.
