Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, TN will be hosting its first
Trombone Day on Saturday, November 17th, 2007. This will be held in
conjunction with our annual All-Star Instrumental Symposium on Friday,
November 16th and will conclude with performances on Saturday the 17th and
Sunday the 18th.

We are proud to announce that our special guest artist for this event will
be Joseph Alessi (www.josephalessi.com), principal trombonist of the NY
Philharmonic.

The events will begin with the TTU All-Star Instrumental Symposium on
Friday, November 16th. This all-day event for high school instrumentalists
is open to players on all band instruments. The trombonists who attend will
participate in a series of masterclasses on the trombone including basic
skills, warm-up techniques, sight-reading, scales, and ESTBOA, WTSBOA, and
MSTBOA audition materials. We will also work on music for trombone
ensemble. The clinics also include a performance by the TTU brass ensembles
and a like-instrument ensemble performance by all the participants at the
end of the day.

That evening, the Tennessee Tech Symphony Band will perform a Sousa Tribute
concert, under the direction of TTU Director of Bands Joseph Hermann, that
will feature TTU Faculty soloists as well as a performance by our guest
artist for the weekend, Joseph Alessi.

For more information regarding the TTU All-Star Instrumental Symposium and
nomination forms, contact the TTU Band office at (931) 372-3165 or via

Following the concert, we will be holding an after hours jazz trombone
session at a local watering hole (hopefully an 18-yr old and up location
TBA), featuring Slide Company, a middle TN based jazz trombone ensemble with
Bill Huber and Barry Green among others.

Saturday, November 17th will be our first TTU Trombone Day. We will begin
the day with a group warmup session followed by a masterclass by Joseph
Alessi. After a lunch break, we will return to the auditorium for a mass
trombone ensemble reading session where we will read music for multiple
trombones, directed by Joshua Hauser, Mr. Alessi, and several other guest
conductors. The afternoon will continue with a series of mini-concerts by
our guest trombone/low-brass ensembles. At this time, participating
ensembles include: The University of Tennessee Trombone Choir, The Lee
University Low Brass Ensemble, Bone Therapy, and the Belmont University
Trombone Choir.

During the day we will have exhibits of trombones from Shires and other
manufacturers as well as displays from Loud Mouthpieces, Hickeys Music,
Cimarron Music Press, and Williams Music Publishing. We will also have a
display from Rush¹s music, based in Crossville and Knoxville.

That evening will feature a recital by Mr. Alessi accompanied by Paul
Thurmond on piano. Trombones at Tech, the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir,
will join Mr. Alessi for the second half of the show. The program will
feature works by Henri Tomasi, Arthur Pryor, Greg Danner, Johannes Brahms,
John Stevens and more.

Sunday, November 18th, Mr. Alessi will be the featured soloist with the
Bryan Symphony Orchestra in a performance of a new concerto for trombone and
orchestra by Steven Gryc. Tickets for this particular concert are limited
and will be available through the BSO office by calling (931) 372-6088 or
e-mailing bryansymph at tntech.edu <mailto:bryansymph at tntech.edu>

All events other than the Bryan Symphony Orchestra are free and open to the
public although admission will be limited to available seats.
