Alisha,
To add one thought to Gabe's advice, try to find an attorney that
understands the particular needs of you as a freelancer. Local 34-627 here
in KC has one who will represent musicians for rates substantially lower
than what some of the local firms charge. In other words, you don't need a
million dollar lawyer to solve a hundred dollar problem.
Like the others, I doubt you need a business registration certificate.
