[Trombone-l] Mouthpiece buzzing and children

Well, as far as age goes, I don't think there's any harm starting
young. One of the first issues of the ITA Journal I read included an
article about a woman who had a class to teach 4-year-olds the alto
trombone. Myself I started when I was 10 (that's when band came up in
public school) but when I was 17 I met Steve McAllister (you out
there, Steve?) who told me he started playing at age 3! I was so
jealous...

My nephew started to enjoy playing my trombone when he was two. By
age three he could get a good sound and use the slide a little bit.
Now he's four and he still asks me to bring my trombone whenever I
visit. I told my sister-in-law to get him a trombone and that he
could be making the rounds of morning talk shows as a kid wonder in no
time, but she didn't think that was a good idea. She's got three
kids, (infant, plus a two- and a four-year-old) and I suppose she was
thinking, "Why would I want MORE noise in the house?!" I only visit a
couple times a year, so I can't teach him myself. I suppose when he
gets older he'll also meet Steve McAllister and be jealous as well.
