[Trombone-l] When to use what instrumentation

I recall a college orchestra rehearsal of The Planets, at which we
finished the entire run-through and the conductor's only comment was
"too much bass trombone, throughout."  I felt mixed pride and shame at
the time.  But I did tone it down for the concert, which sounded
pretty darn good, and I am still proud of the recording.
