[Trombone-l] Tuner for low register?

Hi Matt,

First of all, I generally find it more helpful to practice with a drone than with a tuner, although the tuner is also a useful tool.

Second, tuners have gotten a LOT better since we were in school. The $20 or $30 Korg CA30 works great and hears me pretty clearly down to the pedal register, even with the built-in mic. I think I can say objectively that some of that is due to improvements in my sound - I place a lot of importance on clear pitch center with balanced overtones, and I've noticed that as I get happier with the sound I'm putting out in the low register, the tuner hears me better (go figure) - but also that this is a nice little tuner.

Third, If you do need an external mic the clip-on ones can work well, but not necessarily as indicated. I find that they get confused by the complexity of what is happening at the end of the bell, and I get much quicker, clearer readings if I clip the mic somewhere else, like a small brace somewhere on the instrument. I think the best spot was actually the water key lever, but that might drive some people crazy!

Happy practicing - remember the sound out of Ray's bell!

Gabe

Subject: [Trombone-l] Tuner for low register?

Hi everyone-

Well, I've finally freed up some time in my schedule for regular
practice, and I'm concentrating on improving my fundamentals. I'm having
trouble, though, finding a tuner that works well in the low and trigger
range. Can anyone suggest a specific model that has good, accurate, and
 fast response in that register?
