Some views about using an Alto:

2. Use the alto for all classic stuff -Bach Handel Mozart Bethoveen Schubert
Medelsohn etc.

Can anyone recommend a recording of the Schubert Great C Major (7/9) in
which it is known for sure that the first part is played on alto? Both of my
recordings date from the 50's; Toscanini and the NBC and Krips with the
London Symphony. I'm reasonably certain these were made prior to the alto
renaissance and I would like to compare the tonality. Granted the recording
quality, particularly on the Toscanini monophonic may create a real apples
and oranges comparison but It wouldn't hurt a bit to have an updated
interpretation.

BTW - When the Asheville, NC, Symphony performed this in the 60's I played
1st on a King 2B, the second played a 3B and the third played a 4BF. It was
the only time in the twelve years I played there that the trombone section
was acknowledged for a "bow".
