I've only ever had to do one audition in all my life. I stank up the place
too and was really surprised that I actually won the bass 'bone position
with the BBC Scottish Radio Orchestra. I discovered later that I had
already been picked for the job and that the audition was merely a BBC
formality. Quite embarrassing. I can only think they wanted me for my
arranging ability. Well, it worked prior to that occasion for getting
myself into Maynard's band too, and I'd never played bass 'bone up to that
point.
