We recorded Ellington's Ballet Suite "The River," which was
commissioned from him by a ballet company somewhere for orchestra but
was orchestrated by people other than Ellington, I believe. Our
recording was originally released on LP, I don't know if it was
released or is presently available on CD.
The recording is not one of our best, as the conductor was not a gifted
Ellington interpreter, to say the least.
One of the movements from "The River" is heard and danced in the movie
"The Turning Point" ( the Shirley MacLaine - Anne Bancroft catfight
movie that brought Baryshnikov to the attention of the American general
public).
There is another Ellington piece we have played for full orchestra
called "Three Black Kings."

I performed this with the Macon Symphony Orchestra last February (link here: http://www.maconsymphony.com/ ). There are a few excerpts at Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Black-Brown-Beige-Duke-Ellington/dp/B00000IMYC . The CD is a series of takes by Ellington's orchestra ... someone else modified the works for full orchestra. It has some challenging passages for the first trombone, employing the use of a plunger in the high range. It can be played with plunger alone or perhaps with a 'pixie' mute added.
