the pizzicato piece is just amazing. and had me nearly spluttering

yup. they're fairly common around here (with professional tubists).  
especially on four & more valved tubas -- my bass trombone teacher  
studied tuba as his primary instrument and he has a weird rig on both  
his third and fourth valves similar to this. iirc, wilfried  
brandstötter's tuba is a custom build by schagerl (as are most of the  
instruments they play).
