Strike Up the Band: A Salute to the Music of George Gershwin
Cookeville, TN ‹

The Brass Arts Quintet at Tennessee Tech University will present a free
concert at 7:30 PM on Monday, April 2nd, 2007 in Wattenbarger Auditorium of
the Bryan Fine Arts Building, located on the Tennessee Tech campus at 1150
N. Dixie Avenue. The program will feature members of the group in works by
composer George Gershwin.

While Gershwin is perhaps best known for his songs and music for films and
the stage, he was also a very accomplished classical composer, with a strong
jazz and popular music influence. Tonight¹s program will show a
cross-section of his compositions in both traditional and more contemporary
popular settings for brass quintet.

Tennessee Tech Professor of Trombone Joshua Hauser says of the concert, ³Our
Spring concert is traditionally a collection of lighter works with a focus
on a particular concept. In previous years we have performed music of the
Rock and Roll era, music from TV and Films, and music from the Titanic and
we thought that we would take this opportunity to showcase the music of
George Gershwin, who was a master at creating works in the classical/popular
crossover genre. There is a reason why so many musicians keep coming back to
his works and we want to share these timeless melodies with the entire
community.²

Works to be performed include Strike Up the Band, Love is Here to Stay, Nice
Work if You Can Get It, excerpts from An American in Paris, selections from
Porgy and Bess and more.

³This should be a fun performance that everyone will enjoy. We look forward
to seeing you here.²

Members of the quintet are: Charles Decker and Chris McCormick, trumpets;
Jennifer Kummer, horn; Joshua Hauser, trombone; and Winston Morris, tuba.
