There were discussions of this in early April 2002 and mid July 2000.
Moreover, there is the article I published a bit over a year ago in 
the Historic Brass Society Journal 17 (2005): "When is an Alto 
Trombone an Alto Trombone? When is a Bass Trombone a Bass Trombone?-- 
The Makeup of the Trombone Section in Eighteenth- and Early 
Ninteenth-Century Orchestras."
