The Atlanta Symphony just played a program with two big orchestra +
chorus pieces, Szymanowski's Symphony #3 and Orff's Carmina Burana.
For the Szymanowski the trombone section was augmented by a player I'm
pretty sure I recognized as Ed Nicholson, another top-tier trombonist
in the Atlanta area who was acting principal trombone with the ASO for
a couple years. Dang, these guys are good.
Recently Bob Devine wrote about ASO players Colin Williams and George
Curran trying and buying Shires trombones. From what I could see of
the engraving on the bells, Williams, Curran, and second trombone
Stephen Wilson were all playing Shires horns (all with yellow brass
and Thayers).
