[Trombone-l] Equipment Question and Euphonium

About a year ago when I was looking for a euphonium on a budget I looked at
two horn, the Yamaha YEP-321 and a mid 70's Besson compensating 3 valve.
I liked the all around playability of the Yamaha, but when it came to sound
and intonation I felt like the Besson was far superior.
When push comes to shove as a doubler, I want the equipment that gives me
the most authentic sound with the least amount of change. In my opinion the
Yamaha is too easy to play and sound like a trombone player trying to play
the euphonium; too cylindrical.
Also I feel that the 4th valve on a non compensating system serves little
purpose, other than to offer an in tune 1+3 and 1+2+3 combination, but even
then on the YEP-321 the 4th valve C and F are much brighter than the
chromatically neighboring notes.
Unfortunately there aren't any on eBay right now, but usually the Besson's
go for between $200 and $600 depending on condition, where as YEP-321 go for
between $500-$1000.
Just my 2 cents.
