I friend of mine had one of these, which I thought was rather a rather 
stupid design when I saw it.  He explained it's usefulness.  He plays a 
daily TV show where they use clip on mics on the horns.  With this stand 
you can put the horn on the stand without having to take the clip on mic 
off each time.  It works great for him.  It could be useful if you had 
to set a horn down without having time to remove a mute on a Broadway 
show or something like that where you are doubling.  It's not for me, 
but in certain circumstances it could be the way to go.
