[Trombone-l] LASIK Surgery

Dan,
I had the LASIK surgery about 9 years ago and have never regretted
it. I had no complications and have 20/15 distance vision, down from 20/400
w/astigmatism. As I have gotten older, I do now need reading glasses in low
light situations, including some gig situations. But the cost of the
reading glasses ($15-20) is significantly less than the last pair of real
glasses I purchased in 1997 ($550 for progressive bi-focals).
Regarding recovery, I'm sure things may be a bit different now than
they were when I had my surgery. I walked out of the eye clinic wearing the
big wrap-around sunglasses they give you and was amazed at what I could
see. I went straight home but didn't go to bed right away as advised.
Within two hours, I couldn't hold my eyes open and had to go to bed. Later
that night, I got up and was ok, but my eyes were still tired and stressed,
so I went back to bed. I was able to go to work the next day.
I absolutely could not have played a gig that night. I do believe the
steps you take right after your surgery and the time you give your eyes to
rest and recover are important to the success of the procedure. Regardless
of how simple they make it, it is still invasive surgery, and you must give
your eyes time to recover.
My advice: Find a sub for the show, rest up, and let your eyes begin
their recovery peacefully.
Good luck,
John McVey

Has anyone on the list had LASIK surgery? I'm scheduled to have it in
mid-August, in the morning before an evening show. Any thoughts from those
who've had it or know about it as to whether I'll be recovered well enough
to play a show that night? I'm a bit concerned about pressure from blowing
as well as the time it'll take for the visibility to click in (though I've
heard that you see fine soon after).
Coincidentally, the doctor who will be performing the surgery also plays
trombone (I still trust him), and said I should be ok. I'm just checking
around to be safe; you never know – maybe he wants my gig...
Thanks!
Dan
