Te-re [that's Estonian for Hello], Y'all,

Neeme Järvi was in town five weeks ago to celebrate his 70th birthday, and led the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra in a program of Nordic music and the Liszt Faust Symphony. Sons Paavo and Kristjan were on hand to conduct as well, and daughter Maarika was flute soloist. Paavo led a performance of the Sibelius Finlandia, and the trombone section--principal Andres Kontus, second Peeter Margus, and bass Jaanus Teiva--really sizzled. A review of the concert and some history by Mary Ellyn Hutton of the Cincinnati Post appears here: http://www.neemejarvi.com/news.htm A DVD of the evening is planned.

If you have never seen Neeme work, here's a short excerpt from the first movement of Mahler Second. This concert was recorded in April 2006, and the orchestra is made up of players from the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, and the New Jersey Symphony. I believe that's James Markey playing first here, with Joe behind him awaiting his turn. I don't know the other guys; maybe someone could identify them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO1RADj3K6E
The DVD should be out shortly, and, as you can hear, the brass playing is pretty good. Allan Kozinn's review appeared in The New York Times at http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/13/arts/music/13mahl.html?ex=1182571200&en=ec5a3612107037a3&ei=5070

In another article about the Mahler concert, Willa Conrad of the Newark Star-Ledger relates how a few years ago Neeme led the striking Philadephia Orchestra musicians in a benefit concert for them, an action that may have adversely affected his own career.

As you can see, I'm a big Neeme Järvi fan.
