[Trombone-l] Sunburn ..please share your remedies.

I actually fell asleep on the observation deck of a cruise ship in
30ft. seas with 30-50knot winds because it was the only place on the
ship I could feel relatively comfortable and not hurl my brains out
anymore. When I awoke, I had apparently slept 6hrs. in full sun + the
winds. Fortunately I wore long pants and a wind breaker. So I ended up
with 2nd degree sunburn only on my face, hands & neck.
My cheeks and and backs of my hands blistered, cracked & weeped for a
week.
Two things that helped ease the freakish pain and promoted the healing
believe it or not were:
A) Noxema -- slather it on & cover with a cool soaked wash cloth. Cools
soothes & smells good ta boot! (The key is to leave it on and cover it
with a cold wash cloth.)
B) Tea bags (Tetley! Not herbal!) -- Something about the soaked tea
leaves (maybe it's the caffeine... more likely the titanic acid) really
soothed the pain. Microwave 2 or 3 tea bags in a mug of water for 2 or
3 minutes. Let steep and allow to cool. You can either place the tea
bags themselves on the affected area. Or put the brewed tea in a spray
bottle (we are 'bone players after all!) and spray the affected
I've never forgetten that experience, mainly because I had to perform 2
shows in those seas, while 99% of the 800 passengers were bringin' all
that great boo-fay! back up for discussion. Nobawdy wanted to watch
half-wit cruise singers do yet-another Bette Midler medley badly. But
we went on anyway.
After which I drank heavily and nearly signed off at the next port.
..unwisely, I calmed down & did 5 more ships. I just made sure they
were bigger than that first floating pop can!
On the 4th I met me now wife of 15yrs., 2 kids & a 4th mortgage. So I
guess it wasn't all bad.
I've got plenty of other "cruise ship war stories." Many involving vast
quantities of rum, a couple of sharks, and one time with the police on
the beach in Antigua. But fortunately that's the only one involving a
severe sunburn.
Cheers!
