The version we play (Kalmus?) has the part labeled Contrabassoon _and_
Serpent, resulting in the part being played in octaves. Some conductors
have the part only played by contrabassoon, resulting in some sections
sounding empty, like a pedal with a 16 foot without the 8 foot stop. It
works best for the part to be played in octaves, but tuba can be a
little too open sounding, although F tuba can be OK. Ophicleide or
serpent would be best, even 3rd bassoon could work OK.
