Carmina Burana...one of my favorite pieces! As a vocalist, I really
like a recording I pulled down from iTunes. Orff: Carmina Burana
Leonard Slatkin with St. Louis Symphony. Hakan Hagegard is the
baritone soloist on this recording. The choir at East Central
University, where I am a librarian, did Carmina last year. (Yes, they
do let librarians sing in the choir.) We were beginning to think the
piece was cursed! One of our accompanists died of a sudden heart
attack two weeks before the first concert date. Our conductor was
hospitalized for an emergency appendectomy. Needless to say, I was a
bit worried about my friend who took over as conductor! (a music
faculty member who also sings in the choir) His biggest fear was
that his tux pants would fall down while conducting! ;-)
Fortunately, we managed to pull it off without any more deaths or
major injuries.
