Brass Arts Quintet and Friends in Concert
Cookeville, TN
The Brass Arts Quintet at Tennessee Tech University will present a free
concert at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, February 28th, 2007 in Wattenbarger
Auditorium of the Bryan Fine Arts Building, located on the Tennessee Tech
campus at 1150 N. Dixie Avenue. The program will feature quintet trumpeter
Charles Decker as well as guests Greg Danner, horn and Eric J. Willie,
percussion.
The concert will be divided into two parts, one by the quintet performing
Malcolm Forsyth¹s Golyardes¹ Grounde, three pieces by Maurice Ravel
including the haunting Piece en Form de Habenera featuring trumpeter Charles
Decker, and Quintet by Michael Kamen. The second part of the program will
bring in Greg Danner on horn to join the quintet to perform three works for
brass sextet: Divertimento for brass and timpani by Heinrich Gattermeyer
with Eric Willie on timpani, Sextet for Brass by Oskar Böhme, and Sandpoint
Rag by Gunther Schuller.
Tennessee Tech Professor of Trombone Joshua Hauser says of the concert, ³We
always look forward to the opportunity to work with our colleagues on other
instruments and we thought that this would be a perfect chance to showcase
some of our favorite compositions for brass sextet.²
³I am also particularly excited by Michael Kamen¹s Quintet. While mostly
known as a film composer for such movies as Mr. Holland¹s Opus, Robin Hood:
Prince of Thieves, Lethal Weapon, and Die Hard, he also composed several
works for other mediums. The Quintet was commissioned by the Canadian Brass
on 2001 and was one of his last compositions. It has a very majestic
quality that is truly engaging.²
³This should be a fun and varied performance that everyone will enjoy. We
look forward to seeing you here.²
Members of the quintet are: Charles Decker and Chris McCormick, trumpets;
Jennifer Kummer, horn; Joshua Hauser, trombone; and Winston Morris, tuba.
