Irvin Wagner celebrated another birthday on Valentine's Day, February 14th. I have lost track of how many this makes for him, but it's nice to see that he still has the spirit of a twelve-year-old.
As a high school student growing up in McPherson, Kansas, Irv Wagner was an All-State offensive tackle in football. He had great speed for a big guy, and led the way for the running backs on end-around sweeps. Irv appeared with his spoon act on Ted Mack's Original Amatuer Hour, a popular TV show in its day. He made the finals. Later on, he completed his graduate degrees in trombone with Emory Remington. (I guess it was not possible to major in spoons at Eastman, but the spoon world's loss is our gain.)
One year ago, I heard his OU Trombone Choir at a convention in San Antonio, and they sounded better than ever. It's great to know that good things are still happening in Norman.
