I often find that the hand slides of trombones are longer than they need to
be, for the inner slide tubes. Put only one inner tube into the hand slide
and see if theres any extra outer tubing, before the inner slide tube
reaches the joints of the slide tubes and crook.
Most of the trombones that I work on have such out of wack slides that
cutting off a bit of the outer slide tube, at the crook end, is just the
beginning of all of the adjustments that need to be made, in order to get
the slide tubes dent-free, straight, polished, parallel and aligned.
Perhaps your slide needs other work, as well. And perhaps your outer slide
is long enough to cut a bit of otherwise unused tubing off of the hand
slide. Ask your repairperson about it.
