So at that point, it is a social event, not an artistic one. The audience
gets to act "cultured" and the orchestra gets to play music they like as
part of the deal. Eventually the excitement goes away on both sides.

I once told a radio interviewer that I didn't mind if people hated my
music. He looked at me like I was nuts. I told him, and I still believe,
that a strong emotional reaction to music is the sign of real success. If
it is strong enough to get positive reactions, it will get negative
reactions too. That's ok with me, people have varied tastes. It's when I
can't get them to wake up or pay attention that I feel like I'm wasting my
time.

Of course that is all about art. There is commerce music too, and in that
scene, what ever the buyer wants is fine with me. It seems like the Mexican
orchestra has entered the commerce music realm, but luckily for them the
buyer's need is to feel culturally superior, so the orchestra still gets to
play good music.
