[Trombone-l] Boos

Funny how everyone interprets booing differently. I've wished for years
that booing were more commonplace, as poor performance is just as
commonplace as it's ever been. (Excellent performance is still oddly
rare, though technically adept performance is widespread.) Booing would
be a good balance to the automatic standing ovation that, like grade
inflation, and crept into concert halls and performing venues. Perhaps
what would be ideal would be honest appraisal, but that seems to be
unlikely in the current climate, where audience members want a peak
experience every time out and create an artificial sense of a "special
event" by overcheering. Or perhaps the audience simply wants to
validate the performers for showing up. I can't say.
