For Immediate Release:

Trombone Recitals at Tennessee Tech University

In Concert:

The Tennessee Tech Trombone Studio will present two concerts of music for
Trombone on Friday, February 2 at 7 PM and Tuesday, February 6 at 7:30 PM in
Wattenbarger Auditorium in the Bryan Fine Arts Building at TTU. Admission is
free.

The first evening¹s concert will be our annual Pops Night for Trombones
including original works for trombones as well as transcriptions and
arrangements for trombone with piano accompaniment. This evening¹s
performance will feature students in the trombone studio at TTU performing
light concert works for trombone solo. Among the pieces to be performed will
be Arthur Pryor¹s famous Blue Bells of Scotland performed by Robert Thatch
from McMinnville along with Bolivar by Eric Cooke performed by Ryan
Carpenter from Mt. Carmel, Rondo a la Turk by Mozart performed by Fred
Nelson of Murfreesboro, and the ³Minute² Waltz by Chopin performed by Adam
Featherston of Knoxville. The concert will be followed immediately by a
similar program by our brothers and sisters in brass in the trumpet studio
at 8:30 PM.

Tuesday¹s concert will feature Dr. Joshua Hauser in a faculty recital with
the assistance of Paul Thurmond, piano, Mark Smith, bass, and Eric Willie,
drums. This concert will also acknowledge the lighter side of the trombone
repertoire, although in a more subtle fashion. Featuring works by George
Gershwin, Henri Tomasi, Roger Kellaway, and Henry Wolking, this evening¹s
performance will show the influence of jazz on Œlegitimate¹ compositions for
the trombone and euphonium.

³One of the main reasons why I first took up the trombone was to be able to
play in my high school jazz band,² says Hauser. ³I was already a euphonium
player and when there was an opening in the band I jumped at the chance.
The selections on this program all have a very definite jazz influence,
although only the Wolking actually uses a standard rhythm section. The
Gershwin is a new setting of the Three Preludes for piano by Ralph Sauer.
The second of these, the Blue Lullaby, is one of my father¹s favorite pieces
and he used to play it on the piano constantly while I was growing up. The
Tomasi Concerto is a serious work for trombone and orchestra, but contains
references throughout to the beautiful jazz ballad playing of Tommy Dorsey.
Morning Song by Roger Kellaway was originally composed for his cello
quartet, a jazz combo consisting of piano, cello, bass and marimba. We will
close with a brand new orchestration of a recent work by Henry Wolking. His
Trombone Tales is a 6 movement concerto for trombone and orchestra that was
written for Larry Zalkind and the Utah Symphony. The final two movements,
Jazz and Salsa and Finale lent themselves to rescoring for trombone with
rhythm section and the composer was kind enough to do this setting specially
for this evening¹s concert. It includes ballad playing, uptempo swing, jazz
improvisation, and latin jazz rhythms.²

³Both evenings should be fun for all ages and I hope that you will be able
to join us for one or both of these concerts.²
