Well............ Maybe, or maybe not.
I don't know this show, but as a performer who's
career has been built on doubling/tripling/etc,
sometimes we, (multi-instrumentalists), play the
instruments required/asked of us, by the contractor or
the page directions.
There are well known places where if I was dictating
instrumentation, I'd do it differently, but that's not
what I was hired for. Examples being Wagner's Ring
cycle, for one. There are many places where the
ContraBass has to play well above the staff (BBb was
used then), yet the player changes to Bass Trb for
much lower parts. This particular double was for
sound, not range. The 4th player plays Bass Trb when
the Tuba is the bottom; when the Tuba functions as the
bottom of the Horns (conical brass), the the 4th Trb
part calls for Contra.

I did a Ballet a number of years ago on Tuba (what the
part "said") where the lowest note was 4th line F
(lowest note!!!!), the highest note was A above middle
C. The whole part could have been played on Alto Trb
easily, or Trumpet, even. But the contractor hired me
to play Tuba. So I did.

Next time someone has the chance to see this show,
check out the Trombone part? If it asks the player to
switch at the questionable point, then this whole
discussion is moot (mute to musicians) :-)--LOL

Happy New Year everyone.
