The 6.5AL is a deeper mouthpiece than the 7C, inside rim diameters are
close to the same. The throat and backbore on the 6.5AL are
considerably bigger than on the 7C. I don't find that the 6.5AL works
well for me on horns smaller than a King 3B. The 6.5A has Bach's
standard tenor throat and backbore with the same cup and rim as the
6.5AL. It's a better match for me on small horns.

The legend I heard was that Vincent Bach designed the 6.5 AL for Glenn
Dodson, who used it on a Conn 78H. If true, it explains why the thing
works so well on medium to medium-large horns.

Basically, if you're happy with the 7C I'd forget about all this stuff.
