Good advice from everyone. Also, go to Youtube.com and search "Count Basie." There are a lot of great old videos of the Basie band from the 30s, 40s, 50s -- all the way up until after he passed away. You'll be able to see and hear who was playing what in the bone section. Notice, too, that often there were only three bones in the section. Also, if you decide to use a "real" bass trombone, a single-valve, .562 bore would probably more appropriate as a double-valve might be a bit too heavy.
