[Trombone-l] Problem With My Elkhart Conn 72H -- Update

Yes, I've seen lots of these types of problems, even from top grade
horns. My own 88h had a huge solder blob near the main tuning slide.
Kudos to John for finding this stuff! My guess is that the solder
blobs, unless huge, are not the main problem. They will affect a note
or a few notes only as they interrupt an acoustic nodal area. the
exception is if the blob is between the mouthpiece and the end of the
upper/inner slide. Then it could affect all or a series of notes.
Same goes for dents-unless huge they don't have a large effect on
playability. The valve alignment affects 4 areas at once (with valve
engaged) or two areas with valve not engaged. More likely to have a
general affect on general playability. A solder blob would have to be
huge to have a similar effect as a valve moderately misaligned. The
compression leakage might also play a role.
I hope John can get your 72h playing like it should. It's nice to
have a technician who is also a player. I think it makes a big
difference.
Cheers,
