This I posted 3 days ago - but it never showed, so I try it again (not that it is very important :-))

I have always thought the name comes from the Italian "tromba". A trombetta 
would be a small tromba and a trombone a large one.
 
But here in Europe, we mess almost everything up (save the money :)) - the 
Germans call the trombone "Posaune" which probably comes from "Buccina" (also the note 'B' they call 'H' and B-flat then becomes 'B'). In France a trombone is a paperclip. It's confusing!
