I've heard a different story (from Blair Bollinger): It's more like Bartok
throwing up. It comes right after a quote from Shostakovich's Leningrad
Symphony. Apparently Bartok heard the Leningrad while writing the
Concerto, and thought it was the dumbest thing he ever heard - so he put
the Leningrad theme in the Concerto and then "threw up" after hearing it.

Another spectacular use of the trombone, no?

I have no idea if that's 100% accurate - you can take it up with Blair if
you want!
