[Trombone-l] Bartok Gliss

The only problem with that is that flat 7 with the F trigger depressed
is C, not B. Raymond Horton's way works well, but I appreciate the
comment made by the person who said it's difficult to play while someone
else is messing with your tuning slide. For my money, given the choice
between a good solid (in tune) B, with a break in the middle of the
gliss, and a squirrely, lipped-down B in 7th (with no break in the
gliss), I'd prefer the former every time. I did this piece recently (on
2nd, not bass), and the conductor wanted us to really nail the lowest
note with good sound and volume. In this particular case the gliss
itself was rather incidental in comparison with the low E and low B.
The bass trombonist broke the gliss and it sounded just fine. It
obviously would have been better on an F bass, but...

Keep in mind that in the context of this magnificent work, this is a bit
of comic relief. I would have a couple of different versions of the
gliss ready to go before rehearsal in case the conductor asks you to try
it another way, but I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. In my
experience this is one of those things that we trombonists obsess over,
and most conductors seem not to notice or care one way or the other.
Others have had different experiences I'm sure.

The way I see it, is there is no real trick. If you have a trigger, you
should just play it flat 7 to 1 with trigger pressed. B to F. The second
bone part is E to Bb so that 7-1.

That's all I got on that one.
