This was news from Saturday.
I thought I should pass it on.
Glenn Dodson, one of the world's premier trombonists
passed away a few
hours
ago at his home. Joe Alessi, principal trombone of the
NY Philharmonic was
visiting him when Glenn fainted in Joe's arms. Glenn's
wife Susan called
911
but when they arrived a few minutes later Glenn was
gone.
Glenn graduated from The Curtis Institute of Music in
the 1950s, then
served
as first trombone with the President's own U.S. Marine
Corps Band for 3
years, He spent the next 9 years as Principal trombone
of the New Orleans
Symphony, moonlighting while there with Al Hirt, Pete
Fountain and many of
the other New Orleans Jazz Giants of that era.
He then went to the Chicago Symphony for 3 years. He
was asked by Eugene
Ormandy to join the Philadelphia Orchestra where he
became the principal
trombone for the next 28 and a half years before
retiring about 15 years
ago. He was at that time universally acknowledged as
one of the four finest
classical trombonists in the world.
When he retired, he formed his own jazz band in
Philadelphia, free lanced
around the world and taught at Curtis. He joined The
Barbone Street Jazz
Band about 7 years ago and was an absolute joy to work
with, both
personally
and musically.
He will be sorely missed by all of us who knew him.
RIP Glenn.
Condolences may be sent to:
Mrs. Susan Dodson
39 Ridgeview Road
Newtown Square, PA 19073
Sadly,
Steve Barbone
