It was 30 years ago, almost exactly. Dave Summers was teaching trombone
at Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music (now Shenandoah
University) in Winchester Va. He had Glenn Dodson come in for a master
class on Easter Monday. I was 16. The class was free, and it lasted all
day. Glenn literally played all day with no visible signs of ever
getting tired. As Bill stated, he was a first class gentleman and his
sound was just amazing. As a result of that day, I decided that I wanted
to become a professional musician. I remember him playing the Creston,
and at the end of the slow lyrical section where it goes from High D# to
High C# 3 times, each time progressively softer, and the sound NEVER
lost it beauty and clarity and purity, and really got done to a whisper.
Rest in peace, Glenn. You have had such an impact on so many people that
will never be forgotten.
