[Trombone-l] "Old Newbie" question....

OK, I've been a musician since I was two, according to my music teacher dad,
who said I was the only 2 year old he ever knew of who could get good clear
tone quality on a flute head joint.
I've played lots of different instruments in lots of different bands and
orchestras through high school and college, and even post college, where I
learned how to set fences in place.
I've heard of alto singing parts, and alto flutes, and alto saxes, and
"all(my)toes" crammed in my shoes.....
But I have never seen or heard of an alto clef. Maybe an alto singer named
Cliff, but not an alto clef.
Enlighten me, o wise ones.... what in the blue blazes is alto clef?
(off-line is fine, so as to not bore those of the rest of you who are in the
know about alto clef)
I await enlightenment...... or flames for the really bad jokes. Your
choice.
